A 7g sinking VIB (vibration) lure shines when you control depth and keep it in contact with fish. From shore, that usually means longer casts, managing a steeper line angle, and letting the bait work down a break. From a boat, you can set up directly over structure, fish more vertically, and fine-tune your retrieve path.
Start with a long cast and a controlled countdown. After splashdown, keep your rod tip low and count the lure down to the depth you want (roughly 1–2 feet per second depending on line, current, and lure design). Once it’s near the zone, use a “lift-and-drop” retrieve: lift the rod 6–18 inches to make the lure vibrate, then follow it down on semi-slack line so it can flutter and stay close to bottom contours.
On flats or shallow banks, switch to a steady slow roll that keeps the lure ticking above weeds or rocks. If you feel constant bottom, speed up slightly or raise your rod angle; if you feel nothing, count down longer or add brief pauses so it sinks back into the strike zone.
From a boat, position upwind or up-current of the target and work the lure back through the structure. You can cast and “stair-step” it down ledges, or fish it nearly vertical by dropping it below the boat and hopping it with short snaps. Vertical presentations excel on fish holding tight to humps, bridge pilings, or deep weed edges because you can keep the lure in place longer.
Use your rod to control vibration: a sharper lift produces a stronger thump, while a softer lift keeps it subtler. If fish are following but not biting, shorten the lift, extend the pause, and let the lure fall on a slightly slack line to trigger reaction strikes.

A medium-light to medium spinning setup with a fast tip helps detect vibration and bites, while 10–15 lb braid with an 8–12 lb fluorocarbon leader improves sensitivity and sink control.
